The sport involves massive, thick-headed breeds, including Central Asian
shepherd dogs and Caucasian ovcharka, bred by livestock herders across the
continent to defend sheep and cattle in the mountains and on the steppe.
Collectively the dogs are called volkodavs, the wolf-killers.
