GSDC of N Indiana also drew 5 point entries last year. Judges were John Bemont
and Bo Vukovich. These two also judge dogs and I think people are beginning to
catch on that not all judges do and who they are. We are anticipating 5 points
next September also, as we have Lee Brown and Michael Cheeks.

Last year our Specialties (Cincinnati & Central Ohio) drew 5 point majors for
the first time in many years and that was against a Futurity weekend only 6 or
7 hours away!!! After several years of declining entries, I see increasing
entries in our area at most shows...at least this past year. It's too early to
tell if this is a trend or a fluke. We'll see this year! I think that we got
better entries than usual because we had judges that had not judges in this
area several times in the past several months and they were judges that are
known to do their own thing and judge dogs. The benefits of that are higher
entries and lots of good dogs to chose from! By the way those judges were Twyla
Miner & Gary Szymczak.

There are still 5 pt shows, it just depends on where you are..but, to answer
your question, it is a combination of many things. Handlers are expensive and,
like it or not, fair or not, handlers are the ones who win the points much of
the time. They have experience, it is their job and they have a selection of
fine animals, so I have no axe to grind. Travel is very expensive too, and many
people have to either stay in their own backyard, or really limit the number of
distance shows that they go to. A lot of people are tired of what they perceive
are 'politics' in the dog show hobby. I mean, many think, "who needs it?
Certainly the dog doesn't give a rip", Also, dog clubs, including the parent
club, need to market themselves and woo the newcomer into the sport. You won't
get club workers, fanciers, supporters and trophy donations from people that
you
snub, make to feel inferior, or make them feel bad about their dog if it is not
up to 'your' qulaifications. So, these ar
e just a
few of the things that have reduced the number of solid 5 point shows. There

were HUGE!! Shepherds as far as the eyes could see! Is
the AKC responsible for this? The Economy? It was nice
