Because this is off topic please respond directly to me and not clog the list.

My 22-month-old intact GSD slipped in the wet grass and injured her left hock
at agility class. I believe now that it was actually a reinjury. A month
earlier
she step in a hole and rolled while doing a flying recall. I stopped her,
examined her and she appearer fine - no limping, apparent pain or hesitation
to continue playing.

Anyway, my vet - who is also our agility instructor - examined Blue immediately
and thought it was a simple sprain. She prescribed 10 days of a low dose of
Rimadyl to reduce inflammation and ordered crate rest with only on leash
potty breaks.

When Blue's hock was still swollen (slightly) and lame at the two week check
up, she did a series of X-rays comparing hocks, drained the joint, put on a cast
and refereed us to an orthopedic specialist. We go Tuesday and I was told to
come prepared for surgery. The X-rays show that Blue's growth plates are not
yet closed and that a piece of bone that is attached to the ligament on the
inside of the hock is pulling way.

How do I keep Blue, a high drive working lines bitch, from losing her mind
and taking mine with her while she is on extended crate rest?

What is the long term recovery rate for this type of injury? Is this an agility
career ending injury?

What do I need to worry about if Blue does have surgery?

What do I worry about if the orthopedic specialist thinks she does not need it?

Is a second opinion in order?

How does one rehabilitate such an injury?

I know arthritis, including swelling and maybe some extra bony ("calcium")
deposits is a natural result of injury to a joint. What can I do now to minimize
some of that in the future?
