How can I tell which updates I should accept?

I?m frequently asked, ?I see a lot of popups on my computer screen asking me
if I want to ?update this? or ?update that?. Which ones are OK to say ?Yes?
to??

Unfortunately, there are many popups which, if you ?activate? (or ?accept?)
them, can do more harm than good. The problem is, how can you tell the
difference between those that are ?good? and those that are not?

The general advice I usually give people is ?If the update request is from a
?major company?, then say ?Yes? to it.? I know what you?re thinking??What is
a ?major company???

Here are some updates that I deem ?acceptable?:

 · Anything from ?Microsoft? à
or from ?Windows?

  · Anything from ?Adobe? à
including ?Flash?
or ?Adobe Reader?

· Anything from ?Java? à

· Anything from Your Antivirus à
Program
