In celebration of the 75th Anniversary of Fairfield University, they
have assembled a unique, one time only exhibit of great art from around
the world that celebrates the founding of the Jesuit - Society of Jesus
religious order and the Church of the Gesu in Rome. Some of the items
have never left Rome before, others are from public and private
collections around the world.
I went about 2 weeks ago and some of the work is remarkable. If you have
never been to Europe before, this is a great opportunity to see things
that are even older than me from the 1500's and 1600's. Some of the
paintings look like they were done yesterday and they are 500 years old.
The paint still looks wet!
The signature item is a marble bust of Robert Bellarmine, the founder of
the Jesuits, done by Gian Bernini himself. Bernini also designed St
Peters Square in Rome and the Main Altar in St Peters Basilica, among
other great works for various Popes in Rome and throughout Italy. This
statue has been mounted on a wall in the Church of the Gesu since it was
created, and has never left its perch, let alone Italy. And its going
back at the end of the month. You can actually see whats in back of the
statue - not fancy, but its been on a wall and no one has ever really
seen this part. Gives you an idea of how these things were carved.

In our busy lives, we all need to stop and take the time to reflect on
history and some of the great art that was created. All the best and enjoy.
