I forgotten:

Why is it used?
For easier debugging of code, structured languages like Pascal have also start
and end tags, and using indent make it easier to find missed end or start tags
....

SEEdit have an "Unbalanced Tag Checker" inbuilt that check for unbalanced tags
on every open and save documents. So Save often, then you get a message at the
bottom of the editor window if unbalanced tags is found, and that happens often
when using copy and paste, at least for me.

And to have control on all the divs use comments to the div end tags. It make
it easier to debug the code. And try to use divs with an ID or css class to
easier see/understand where it begin and ends.

HTML5 make it some easier, in html5 is more divs like header, nav, section,
article and aside to make the code more readable and easier to understand.

But it is always what you like and don't like ..... and sometimes there is a
reason......
