*         From Shane Stadler:

Great start to the Citizenship in the Community Merit Badge. The guys
had a lot of good input and were discussing some pretty deep concepts.
We were able to complete requirements; 1, 2b and 6.

This merit badge has some homework. For next week, we would like for the
guys to complete requirement 2a:

On a map of your community, locate and point out the following: a-Chief
government buildings (city hall, courthouse, public works building, etc)
b-fire station, police station, and hospital nearest your home
c-historical or other interesting points.

An easy way to do this is go onto Google Maps and print out a map of
Burlington (or Elon, Mebane, where ever you live) and note the
locations.

Also, the badge requires a total of 8 hours of volunteer work for a
charitable organization outside of scouts. The guys came up with a lot
of good organizations - Meals on Wheels, church furniture ministry,
Loaves and Fishes, etc - they are not limited to these (there are a lot
of great and worthy organizations that could use a hand) but it would be
good to go ahead and start working on this too.

We are planning to visit the City Council on October 4th. We will get
you more information as that date gets closer.

It is quite a privilege to work with these young men and I look forward
to the next few weeks.

Shane
