State Bank of India staff to get up, close and personal
(Business Standard)
K Ram Kumar in Mumbai
Published : March 20, 2004

The State Bank of India (SBI) , as part of its business process re-engineering
exercise, wants its clerical and subordinate staff to don the mantle of a
?grahak dost? (customer?s friend) at its branch lobbies to proactively assist
customers.

So, instead of just being rooted to their chairs and proffering verbal
assistance, SBI staff will personally direct customers to the right counters,
help them complete transactions, and also assist the uninitiated in using ATMs
and other hi-tech amenities.

The commercial banking behemoth also intends setting up centralised processing
cells across its 14 administrative circles to crank up the speed of processing
of loan applications of Rs 2 crore and above.

The objective of the cells is to compress the turnaround time for loan
application processing to one to three weeks as against the three weeks to
three months time it takes now.

According to A Ramesh Kumar, chief general manager, Local Head Office (Mumbai),
the pilot run of the ?grahak dost? initiative is currently underway at 14
branches of SBI in Mumbai.

?As far as customer service goes, personal touch is as important as the
ambience of the branches. In each of these 14 branches two award staff are
mobile and available in the lobby to help out customers. Hence, one will not
find customers looking askance at these branches. This initiative is being
rolled out first in our circle (Maharashtra & Goa). Gradually it will encompass
all the circles,? he said.

The bank has started a centralised processing cell each on a pilot basis in
Mumbai and Pune for processing large value (Rs two crore and above) loan
applications. SBI?s centralised loan processing cell has six teams whilst the
Pune cell has two teams doing loan appraisals.

?The long time taken for processing of loan applications was identified as a
weak link. We?re rectifying it by establishing centralised processing cells.
The cells will compress the turnaround time for processing loan applications
considerably,? Kumar said.
