KOLKATA, JUNE 22: State Bank of India (SBI) is
looking for specialist officers whose sole task will
be to push credit for farmers, following the new
government?s directive to lift agriculture credit by
30 per cent. The country?s largest public sector
commercial bank, which has so far sent regular
officers on ?farming? stints at rural branches, now
wants 505 specialist officers on a contractual basis.

These officers will be assigned to improve the share
of agriculture credit to total advances while also
increasing the actual disbursements. A senior SBI
official said 105 of the 505 officers would look after
technical aspects, while the rest will be marketing
officers. All of them would be taken aboard on a
three-year contract.

He pointed out that earlier the bank used to assign
regular officers as rural development officers for
pushing the agriculture loan schemes. ?However, this
is for the first time that we are appointing
specialist officers whose only job will be to push
farm credit,? he informed.

Over the past few years, SBI has been recruiting
specialists in areas like information technology, law
and finance, after pushing through a voluntary
retirement scheme for the earlier staff. Being a
government-owned bank, SBI is following the usual
quota rules.

Of the 400 marketing specialists, 200 will be from the
general category, 103 from other backward classes
(OBCs), 67 from the scheduled castes (SCs) and 30 from
the scheduled tribes (STs). Candidates with experience
in marketing agriculture products will be given
priority.

The official indicated that the 105 technical
specialists would be responsible for processing
proposals fetched by the marketing officers. ?This
schedule of duty includes assessment of proposals and
preparation of sanction or refusal reports,? he noted.
Here also, candidates with experience in related areas
will be given priority. And the same quota rules will
apply - of the 105, 54 will come from the general
category, 27 from the OBCs, 17 from SCs and seven from
STs.

The pay scale for these specialists will be at par
with that of the regular officers, and will also be
negotiable depending on educational background and
experience. They would also be entitled to benefits
enjoyed by the regular SBI officers. ?The decision has
been taken to increase the share of SBI?s farm credit
as a percentage of total advances,? the official
averred.

However, the decision to recruit such officers on
contract has not found favour with the SBI Staff
Association.
