Literally. In Kerala, State Bank of India (SBI) is launching the world's first floating automated teller machine (ATM). The ATM is on a state-owned ferry that plies across the idyllic backwaters of the state, delivering passengers and cash. SBI will use Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) wireless technology to run the machine. The official launch is set for January 2004, says P. Sukumar, assistant general manager at SBI's Ernakulam main branch. "A lot of people are commuting from these islands everyday," Sukumar points out. "They cannot go to the bank to draw cash, it's a trial in itself. And, it is a novel idea too." The picturesque backwaters have nearly 1,900 km of waterways along which hundreds of thousands of people commute daily. Though the ATM is primarily intended to serve backwater regulars, it also hopes to catch the swelling wave of tourists pouring into the state. According to the latest government figures, tourism is now Kerala's fastest growing industry. Last year, it earned Rs 950 crore from foreign tourists alone and grew at nearly double the national average for the sector. This season, all the three-, four- and five-star hotels in the state have been fully booked since mid-December. The other floating cash dispenser is on board the Queen Mary II, the largest cruise ship in the world. However, it is part of a full-fledged bank branch. So SBI officials say that their off-site ATM is distinctively different. The Kerala ATM will join the ranks of another unconventional Indian banking machine. ICICI Bank runs an ATM van in Mumbai which stops daily at four locations in the suburbs. Banks are reaching out to customers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Email From ""Rajendra S.
