True, and I bet those people didn’t have the jet stream right between them and 
Mars either 

But those ones using little old fashioned refractors, one was under 100 mm, at 
least ‘thought’ they saw more detail, so much have at least had sharper 
contrasty markings over the dark mush spots I see /

Man I wish dark skies helped the planets, but most actually look sharper at 
dusk then later since the atpmosphere gets wonky as the rapid cooling occurs at 
that later time. I read some people use setting circles and find the planets 
when it’s really light out and report great seeing conditions.

a 7.5 inch refractor is probably closer to a 10 or 12 inch reflector in terms 
of resolving fine details (no central obstruction). Possibly could have 
something to do w/ long hours of study (the more you look, the more you see, 
etc), better seeing conditions, and good ol' confirmation bias.

  What kills me, is I was reading the history of viewing Mars, and 100 years 
ago, they were using those old 90 some millimeter sized refractors and 
describing so much more detail. The (what they thought were) ‘canals’ were 
seen, using a 7.5 inch refractor, my scope is 8 inches and I’ve never seen 
anything even close to sharp enough to fool me into a canal (a distinct dark 
line). How’d they see all that in those days???

  Yep I saw it like that on Monday night.  Seeing was about 3/5 so I was 
actually happy with the detail I saw.  Remember, Mars is receding quickly so 
details are getting harder to resolve than late May / early June.

    From reading, it seems like most see Mars a lot sharper with more detail 
than I am, but it might be atmosphere in my area. Since you guys are close to

    Last night at 10pm. On the right, is a Mars simulator showing what it 
really was, left is how it looks to my eye, I can relate my view to it, but the
