[sarcmembers] 160m Antenna

Niko,

This sounds like a great opportunity to explore our capabilities. There is
an old wooden boresight platform 100m or so, northwest of the Clubhouse that
might help support an antenna.

Note that I have changed the subject line to agree with the new topic of
discussion.

Eric,

At this point I just wanted to find out what is possible at the club site,
as I am exploring my options for this winter contests.  For this winter my
goal was to try to take the ARRL 160m contest record for W6. I have two
other sites I used before, but one of them is now too noisy.

I am not thinking about stringing wires up in the air, as I use vertical
antennas, but these require many radials on the ground.

My typical set up is like this:

For receiving I use a small 4 square array. This array consists of short
vertical whips (~10' tall) fed into preamps and spaced 135' between them in
a square, connected to a phasing unit in the middle of the square. Each whip
is connected to a 4' ground rod. This array has to be far from any noise
sources, I usually put it 1000' away from my transmit antenna.

A typical transmit vertical I use is about 90' tall, but these antennas
require an extensive ground radial system for efficiency, so they too need
space. To be competitive from a site with poor ground conductivity I figure
that I need to phase two of them. There is probably enough space for one
vertical inside the fenced area.

I will try to come by the club for the next meeting, it really depends on
how far we will be with the refueling outage here at work. I can bring some
pictures of the antennas I put up in the past.
