Some of you may have heard that there were some member side projects on
the go recently:
Arleigh, John and Amy played in the HalCon Halloween parade at the end of
October - it was total improv and was a lot of fun! I used my own surdo and
Amy played a small slung drum and Arleigh bing-bonked on the agogo. We did
a sort of an *afoxe* pattern and also just made up a suitable walking
beat on-the-fly.
There's also the Haltown Stompers jug band with Mike and John (and a
couple of non-Sambanovians) and we played some lively old-time music at the
Helen Creighton Folk Society night last week. I play a washboard, which is
great fun and very forgiving. Mike is the ukulele and kazoo master in
addition to singing, choosing repertoire and telling really bad jokes.
On Saturday night, Arleigh, Ian, and John (and musical friend Pete Watson)
played at a Pagan event at Menz Molly's bar. We called ourselves Fall
Backward and played surdo, snare, agogo, shakers, gankogui bells. djembe,
doundouns and some other small hand instruments. We started with 3 bells
and one shaker and shifted that over to maracatu, one drum at a time, which
then morphed into a few minutes of improv. The second half of the set was
straight up west African with a layer of Ian's amazing stick work on snare
and another higher drum.
While we don't lend out Samba Nova instruments if you have your own gear
or project in mind I encourage you to try this type of side project
activity as it really helps build confidence and rhythm skills that you
bring back to samba practice. If you have a project you might want to think
about tapping into the musicians in Samba Nova as many have their own
instruments and are eager to play in small group settings.
