Hello all,

Below are the minutes from the July regular meeting:

Saguaro Astronomy Club

Minutes of the General Meeting

July 2, 2004

The meeting was called to order at 1930MST by President Thad Robosson.
There were 49 attendees.

1. Thad welcomed the assembly and asked if there were any guests in
attendance. There were six, including three sisters of the evening's
speaker, Steve Dodder.

2. The treasurer was absent. In his stead, Thad reported that the club has
$954.09 in the checking account, $4329.95 in savings and $180.00 in pre-paid
room rental.

3. Thad announced that there would be a star party July 10 at Cherry Road.
Sunset is at 1943MST and moonrise at 0105MST.

4. The next meeting, a Blue Moon meeting, will be July 30, again at Grand
Canyon University, room 105 in the Fleming Building.

5. Paul Dickson reported that letters to update the membership database had
been printed and were available at the meeting. If you don't get one there,
they will be mailed. It is only necessary to return the letter if A
CORRECTION NEEDS TO BE MADE. Send any corrections to Al Stiewing by
snail-mail or e-mail. Thad will also take corrections.

6. Jack Jones provided a report on the Grand Canyon Star Party and its
excellent transparency and seeing. From the audience came a thank you to
SAC for the pizza party at the GCSP.

7. Jack further advised the attendees that the club had received a letter of
appreciation from the teachers and students of Glen L. Burton Elementary
School (Pres Thad's alma mater) for a star party the club had provided.

8. Jack also has some T-shirts available for $15 at the break.

9. Rick Tejera invited the guests to sign the guest book and receive a
complimentary copy of the SAC newsletter.

10. Editor Tejera also reported that the June newsletter was late due to a
family emergency and Jack's being on vacation (which delayed the printing.)
The July issue is now available.

11. An attendee that is a member of the High Powered Rocket Society related
how the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms department had tried to shut down
their club, but they sued and won. A member recently fired a single stage
rocket to an altitude of 77 miles.

12. A.J. Crayon bemoaned not getting enough observations to fill his
newsletter column, especially observations from less-experienced observers.
He had to get observations from (gasp) Steve Coe. He may be forced to
change the column model or end it altogether if he doesn't receive
sufficient observations. They can be old ones.

13. A.J. then reported on the 5-Mile Meadow weekend. Some panicked phone
calls to the rangers were necessary to get clearance to have vehicles off
the road. In appreciation to the rangers, an enlarged, all-sky photograph
by Richard Payne is being sent to the ranger station.

14. Steve Dodder related that he enjoyed the Grand Canyon Star Party and
gave an update on the Pierre Schwar binocular chair. The pedestal, azimuth
bearing and chair are done; he is now working on the optics.

15. Show and Tell:

a. Jeff Hopkins showed 21 images from the June Venus transit he took in New
York. These included his setup and location as well as the transit.

A short break was taken at 2015 to resolve some audio-visual problems.

The meeting reconvened at 2029.

16. Show and Tell (continued):

a. Richard Payne showed 15 photos from Sentinel and 5-mile Meadow, including
the crescent moon, Pipe Nebula, several Messier objects, some wide field
shots and star trails.

b. Rick Rotramel gave another thorough report on the RTMC of this past
Memorial Day weekend, including 21 photos. SAC's Walter Thomas won a merit
award for a teaching telescope.

At 2054, Jennifer Keller introduced the evening's speaker, Steve Dodder.
Steve's talk "The Sun, An Overview" covered solar astronomy. Visit Steve's
web site at http://www.stargazing.net/Astroman

After Steve's talk, everyone was invited to eat and continue astronomy talk
at JB's at the corner of Northern and 35th Avenue.

The meeting adjourned at 2156MST.
