Thanks All,
especially John for that in-depth investigation. One small additional piece of
information that was missing off my snip - She was the "loving wife of Bill".
That fits with the info below.

Paul,
The indexing rules say that when a name is in the format HAMDORF,Marjorie
Elizabeth (Allen), then we treat Allen as a nickname, because itis to the right
of the comma.
That applies in the absence of any information to suggest that Allen wasa
maiden name. In this case, Allen makes no sense as a nickname for awoman, so we
look for supporting evidence.
First, off to the BDMs - and a blank on any HAMDORF-ALLEN marriage
inVic/NSW/Qld.
Next, to the electoral rolls. Marjorie Elizabeth HAMDORF first appearsliving in
Inverleigh (Vic) in the 1949 roll on Ancestry. She was notthere in the 1943
roll. Also in the 1949 roll, living at Inverleigh, wasWilliam Edwin HAMDORF, a
newspaper assistant, and almost certainlyMarjorie's husband (the only two by
that surname in Inverleigh).
Marjorie Elizabeth ALLEN was in the 1943 roll, living in Inverleigh. Sheis not
there in 1949.
Ancestry doesn't have any online rolls for the electorate of Corangamitebetween
these two years.
While the absence of a Vic marriage registration is puzzling, theevidence from
the electoral rolls suggests Marjorie Allen married WilliamHamdorf between 1943
and 1949.
So off to Trove, to see if any evidence of the marriage can be found.
The first interesting item is from the Port Pirie Recorder of 14 Feb1945,
reporting the marriage of a Miss Lena Mary Hamdorf, of Solomontown,SA. Her
brother, Flight Sergeant W Hamdorf, was best man. Among theguests was one M
Allen, of Inverleigh, Vic. Circumstantial evidence thatWilliam and Marjorie
were an item, but looking pretty convincing<g>
I think we have enough evidence in total to conclude that ALLEN was amaiden
name. My guess is they were married in SA between 1945 and 1949,but the SA BDMs
stop at 1937 for marriages, so they're no use. HAMDORF isa very common name in
SA - so I'm not going to look any further in Trove<g>.

Hi All,
This notice has a name in brackets after the forenames, but it smacks ofbeing a
maiden name, although its not in the correct place.
Should I treat it as a nickname of takeas as an alternatesurname.
I have checked existing entries and there is only one from a differentpaper,
that doesn't mention this alternate
Any thoughts?
