This Weekend’s Opportunities to Turn NM Blue
- Valencia County Fair parade. March with Xochitl Torres Small! 10 am (be
there no later than 9:30) this Saturday, 8/11.
- Directions: If you are traveling from the North, take the second Belen
exit 191, and it will get you to Main St. & Camino Del Llano, the dirt lot
adjacent to Family Dollar (S. Main St.), where we’ll gather.
- Send Taylor Meyers (cc’d) an email if you plan to go.
- Voter registration at the fairgrounds, after the parade. 11 a.m. (I-25-Bl,
Belen, NM 87002). Calling all VRAs!

Introducing the 2nd Xoch-Ability Award Winner: Dr. Paul Szauter
Last weekend Dr. Paul Szauter could be found canvassing in Los Lunas on
Saturday and phone banking in Albuquerque on Sunday. The founder and chief
scientific officer of EquiSeq, a company that provides genetic testing for
horses, Paul cites Obama’s description of campaign gut work as to why he’s
putting in the time: “Sometimes you are just in a church basement making phone
calls and eating cold pizza.” Paul revises that for New Mexico: “Sometimes
you are just giving up a weekend and canvassing in 100 degree weather. “And
when you’ve gotten out in the heat and are standing there talking to people,
they know it’s important to you, they know it’s important. “Talking to people
is fantastic. Sometimes people have a hard time getting to the polls, so I can
give them a mail-in ballot. And sometimes all I have to do is show them a flyer
with Xochitl’s face. They take one look and say, ‘that’s someone like me. I
think she would understand my concerns. She’s not someone who thinks you need
an ID to buy groceries.’ “The campaign people in Los Lunas are doing a really
good job. They are constantly cleaning up the lists and narrowing in on swing
voters. They take down the information we give them from knocking on doors.
“The national situation with Trump is so crazy. The minor disagreements
Democrats have with each other are just not that important. "This will be a
transformation election. That’s why between now and the election, I’m not going
to have an idle weekend. I’ll either be canvassing or phone banking, one of the
two.”
