| Dear Terry,
This Wednesday: Please support Sierra Club's legal challenge to a proposal to
dump high-level nuclear waste in New Mexico.
Holtec wants to bury used radioactive fuel cores from commercial nuclear
reactors around the U.S. in shallow concrete structures in southeast New Mexico
"temporarily" until our country figures out an appropriate long-term solution.
Sierra Club lawyer Wally Taylor will appear before the Atomic Safety and
Licensing Board this Wednesday and Thursday, Jan. 23 and 24.
Please attend at 9 a.m. Wednesday to hear Wally's arguments and show your
support. The hearing is at the State Bar of New Mexico, 5121 Masthead St.,
Albuquerque.
The Sierra Club believes that storing this high-level waste in casks at the
reactors where they were generated is the safest solution. However, Holtec sees
lots of money in storing this waste in New Mexico.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of costs we the taxpayer will bear, among them,
safely transporting this waste and dealing with accident training and response.
And Holtec wants to transfer title to the waste to the Department of Energy. So
we pick up the bill to move it. Do we pay for the consequences of accidents or
leakage?
Wally's years of legal work includes preventing re-licensing of old nuclear
plants whose designs have been shown to be risky to workers and the public. He
has asked that Sierra Club supporters attend the hearing, especially during his
arguments, to show public opposition to the nuclear dump.
Come join Wally and listen to the Atomic Safety and Licensing Boards’s judges
determine if the Club’s challenges, and that of several other organizations,
have merit and should go to court.
Your attendance is important. Let's keep New Mexico the Land of Enchantment,
not the Land of Radiation!

See you Wednesday!
