- HJR 4, Free & Fair Elections Resolution, sponsored by Rep. Christine
Trujillo, is scheduled to be heard tomorrow, 12 February in the House Consumer
& Public Affairs Committee. This bill would have the New Mexico Legislature
petition the US Congress to call a convention for the exclusive purpose of
amending the US Constitution to restore free and fair elections. The purpose
us laudable, but such a convention could be dangerous. There is no
constitutional right to limit the topics covered in a constitutional
convention. Thus, much mischief could be done in such a convention, and this
is of special concern when the congress is dominated by conservative interests.
- Please email or call the members of the committee listed below to express
your opposition to this legislation.
- You can prepare, and then copy and paste your message into emails to the
committee members listed at the bottom of this message.
- You can click on the name in the list below to open an email to the
corresponding legislator. If that doesn't work for you, you can go to
https://www.nmlegis.gov/Members/Find_My_Legislator to find the email address.
Your message
- Remember, the principal purpose of the message is to show your opposition
to this joint resolution.
- However, a brief justification for your position is helpful though not
essential, to let the legislator know that you are familiar with the
legislation. You can draw on the above discussion, including the link, of the
