Save NM Seeds: There's some big things going on related to seed sovereignty
that are being pushed through quickly and quietly.
We need to cause a ruckus and get the House to VOTE NO on HB 161!
The implications of HB 161 are frightening in their reach. Taken to their
furthest extremes, this bill would enable the NMSU Board of Regents to regulate
every use of seed in the state, including distribution, possession, planting
and, by implication, even eating. The Attorney General's Office has issued a
strongly worded statement cautioning against the potential abuse of power. This
is an ALEC bill, meaning it's been created by the Koch Brothers,
Bayer-Monsanto, et al. (the usual suspects), and one of the members of the
Board of Regents sits on the ALEC board also. In researching we found, to our
dismay, that several of the legislators we had been working with in the past
efforts to pass the Farmer Protection Act also have deep connections to the
ALEC boards.
