Bacchus Marsh Grammar and Insight Education Centre join forces to offer classes
for Blind and Vision Impaired students from the Western region.
Students who are blind and vision impaired in the western region of Melbourne
and beyond, will now have access to specialist teachers for the blind and
vision impaired at Bacchus Marsh Grammar (BMG) in Maddingley.
This ‘Forward Together’ innovative initiative is a joint venture between BMG
and Insight Education Centre (Berwick), Victoria’s only dedicated specialist
provision for the education of Blind and Vision Impaired students. Insight’s
specialist Satellite Unit at the Maddingley campus is accessible to all vision
impaired students in the western region, and also allows for attendance at
their regular schools.
Prospective students and their parents are invited to ‘Forward Together’ Open
Day information sessions at Bacchus Marsh Grammar on Friday April 28th (from
3.45pm) and Saturday, April 29th (from 10am).
Timothy Hemphill, Principal of Insight, explains that ‘the advantage of the new
Satellite Units provides blind and vision impaired students with access to
Insight’s specialist teachers of the blind and vision impaired delivering the
Expanded Core and Victorian Curriculum. In addition they are able to access
essential life skills and advocacy programs thereby offering them the best of
both worlds for their education i.e. specialist intervention within a dual
mainstream and specialist setting’.
Since Insight’s opening in 2014, Alan Lachman, Insight’s Founder and M.D, has
been on a mission to provide access to the highest possible standard of
education across Victoria for students who are blind and vision impaired. His
daughter Francesca is blind and was the inspiration to establish Insight. When
Mr Lachman returned from Italy with his family in 2007, Victoria was in the
process of closing specialist schools for the blind. Mr Lachman was determined
to build a school which specifically catered for these young students,
preparing them for mainstream school success and for independence as adults.
The partnership with Bacchus Marsh Grammar is the first step in the process of
providing access for the State’s students who are blind and vision impaired
with a number of Satellite units planned for mainstream schools across regional
and metropolitan areas.
