Subject: [roundtable] COVID-19 blindness sector strategy meeting

Dear sector colleagues. I hope you are all staying safe and well. At present,
Blind Citizens Australia is heavily involved in advocacy work alongside other
disability representative organisations to ensure that people with disability
continue to receive the support they need and can have equal access to
healthcare during this pandemic.
In addition, no doubt all our organisations are being inundated with questions
and concerns from people who are blind or vision impaired who are uncertain
about the impact of physical distancing rules on service delivery and on
community access in general.
So I wanted to offer the opportunity to bring our sector together, (virtually
of course), to identify our key challenges and proposed solutions.
I am proposing an initial meeting for Monday, 6 April at 2:00PM to enable us to
identify priorities and determine how regularly we need to meet during this
period. Can you please let me know as soon as possible whether you (or another
representative from your organisation with decision-making capacity) are
available? I will then provide details on how to join.
As a starting point, BCA’s current priorities include:
◦ Provision of information in accessible formats ◦ Clear information on what
people who are blind or vision impaired, and those around us, can do to
maintain their safety due to an increased need to touch their surroundings and
provide/receive sighted guide or tactile interpreting in the case of people who
are deafblind.
◦ Safe, fair and continued access to groceries and supplies ◦ Accessible
home-schooling resources both for students who are blind or vision impaired and
for parents who are blind or vision impaired and required to support the
education of their children.
◦ Information on how people who are blind or vision impaired will be supported
should they be hospitalised because of coronavirus.
