I am a 100,000 mile per year flier on United. I go overseas two or three times per year. I am now all digital so film is not an issue for me. Most of the places i have been overseas, the screeners are more professional than what I have seen in the USA. First off, i would say I have seen people ask for film hand inspections overseas and never seen them be denied. However, in the USA I have heard of stories where there has been some resistance. I witnessed this one time. When I take my camera bag, it is commonly searched in the USA but not overseas. However, when it is searched, the overseas handlers are more complete. They know how to but things back. In the USA, many of the inspectors are incompetent. They are not always careful with lenses, they commonly forget to go through various compartments of the bag, where it would be very easy to hide things. Ok this does not probably answer your question, but i bet in most European countries you will have no problems.

As a side note, I had purchased a cork screw to open some wine while with my wife on a car trip to carmel. I threw it in my briefcase and flew all over with it as I had forgotten. When i was going from Montreal to DC, the Canadians found it.. This was 2 years post 9-11. Mark

Peter:

We've gone through this topic before. I suppose you are pretty safe if you use only film speeds up to ASA 400. Someone suggested that you could get away with 120 film in plastic cans on you body because they are not metallic (worth a try??).
You can also request handcheck with sealed 120 rolls in a zip loc (good luck!).

Another strategy is to buy the film in the country you visit (easy with Formapan in Prague) and Fed EX it back using FED EX's film sensitive label. I received some special-ordered 24 x 30.5 Ilford paper that way recently.

Just my 2 cents. The Rollei is a great travel camera - the one I would choose if only allowed one.

Subject: [rollei_list] Traveling with Rollei

Anyone traveling with film these days through Europe? How are the various
airports? Stricy with xrays? I have some concerns as I am traveling again
and want to take my Rolleis. Athens, Rome, Frankfurt, Heathrow? Comments?
