I have, and shoot both the 35 and the 35s. My 35s is a Singapore version, the
35 (Tessar) is German. I started out with the 35s and was on and off about the
camera until I started shooting strictly ISO 400 film and mostly at f16. It
changed everything. I love both of the cameras now, but prefer the Tessar. For
me, the rendering of either lens seems just a matter of personal
preference/taste.
The Sonnar has that indescribable “something” at wider apertures, but, the 35s
being zone focus, focus is sort of touch-and-go at wider apertures…. making it
more difficult to get that “something” in a well focused shot. The 3.5 Tessar,
on the other hand, seems to produce all its magic at high apertures and
sharpness, making it perfect for the way I use it. Again, this is just my
personal taste and opinion, but I think the 3.5 Tessars, whether they be on
Rollei 35s, Rolleiflex, or any of a number of vintage Zeiss cameras I shoot, is
one of the sharpest lenses ever made.
I mean, even at low lighting, indoors or outdoors, and shooting B&W film, all I
have to do with the Tessar is shoot at higher ISOs and I can retain that f16
Tessar magic and not have to worry about the zone focus.
Another thing I notice about the Rollei 35 cameras is that I can shoot them at
pretty low shutter speeds and still get a clear photograph. I speculate that
this has something to do with the weight of the cameras.

I am sure you are right, Jan, about the Rollei 35S. I would have loved to
come across one. I just never did. I bought the Tessar version on a whim,
when I saw in in a camera store in Oslo. I really wished it had been a Sonnar
version.
Which camera on a long distance hike? Out of the ones you mention, I'd
probably go with the Rollei 35.
The IIIg was a camera I wanted to have every since the 70's when I worked in
a camera store and the owner talked so highly of it. Late in life I ran
across one in a camera store in La Grange (outside of Chicago). I've had it
cleaned up, adjusted and what-not, but I find that I prefer my IIIf or IIIc
over it. It doesn't look like it, but it is slightly larger, significantly
heavier so it gets put into the league of an M2 when it comes to those
variables. The IIIc and IIIf with the Elmar are just so compact and
definitely lighter.
Now ... if I ever run across a Rollei 35S and am still shooting ...

Since I like medium format a lot, a postwar Super Ikonta 531 would be my
choice there.

As to how I like it, it is probably not a fair review from my part. I

been using the pandemic to get all of my Rolleiflexes, Rolleicords and
Leicas fixed up. I don't do much "consuming" these days, so there is a
buffer in my daily budget that I am using.
It does give a nice solid, confident building feel when you handle it. That
Rollei could pack so much into such a small package is very impressive.
They probably just wanted to show off (smile).

very much his picture with the camera too, however I'd like to comment my
own experience with the Rollei 35 Tessar (I also has the 35 S Sonnar but
it's a differnet story), it was never a practical problem to me the first
element movement for focusing ,, I have several samples in my Flickr
gallery taken with the Rollei 35 Tessar and I can't perceive a practical
difference between the center and the edges, all these photogrphas were
printed at the 13x18cm size and look similar regarding the images in the
screen. I know to focus moving the entire lens is better for the image
quality, it happens with the 35S, but I canÂīt see the difference for usual
commercial print sizes 10x15 cm or 13x18cm.

users. There is a mint 35S for sale locally for C$600, but I think I will
wait for a deal, as with many of my camera's and equipment it is a want not a
need! A friend of mine has 35S and also talks very highly of it. I just found
a Pentax 110 with a series of lenses for a good price so having fun with a
miniature SLR.Â
