Noone has suggested that Rolleis are perfect. No camera, unfortunately, is perfect. That's why I, and I think everyone on the list, has numerous different cameras for different purposes.

Robert I too share admiration for Rolleis, which is why I'm on the list. To pretend they are perfect machines is not realistic in my book. My favourite all time camera remains my Mamiya 6. Though the Rollei Plannar leaves it for
dust.

Marvin, A lot of us do share Carlos' admiration for Rolleis. I
believe that admiration is the reason for this list. Robert

The language issue always appears for this kind of discussions, my
point is I perceive you tend to underestimate the Rollei cameras (TLR
and 35) as photographic tools from different point of views in several
of your posts, from the focusing system to the square format and this
time discussing on a photographer you did not recall well, following
your own explanation.
My English is bad in general and even worse when I write quickly, I
always expect a harsh comment about it, BTW a harsh comment on my
English does not mean you are closer to the truth.

I have admired his photographs for a long time though it is a long
time
since I have seen his work over 10 years to be exact.

I remember the content of his work more that the camera he used, the
sqaure format.

If you think that I didn't know of him as a photographer before
you posted
on him, then that is a charge too childish to contend with.

I can prove with much effort, on my part, that Derbyshire
University's
photographic library has several publications by this photographer,
and that
I have taken out and read at least one of hiis books.

I do understand that English is not your first language, and thus
dont
want to be too harsh. Your second language skills are better than
mine by
the way so dont be offended by that.

Marvin.

You wrote this morning:
"I have admired Sidibe photographs for some. I was unaware that he
used a Rollei since the framing is most often not square. His
work is
a living documentary of Senegal!"

Since Sidib? is from Mali and took a lot of photographs keeping the
square or almost square format, I have the right to think you did
not
know about Siridib? very much before my first post on the topic.
You can convert a rectangle into square, but it is a lot easier
to use
a square to compose a rectangle than a rectangle to compose a
square.-

I'm still not tracking with you.(?).

Don't forget the photography can also crop the rectangle to a
suqare,
so these compositional points you mention are not rules set in stone.

When a said his work is documentary, I dont mean that it is
documentary
per say, I mean that his work is an interesting historical record
of Mali,
and as such is very interesting.

Marvin.
