Todd & Eric,

Thanks for the detailed answers.

On my monitor the coating loss really looks nasty in that photo. Sounds like this type coating issue LOOKS way worse than it is.

Thanks again.

It is a coating problem. Many of the Planars on the Rollei TLRs of this period have lost or are losing their front coating - not all, or lots, but many. The darkish areas on that lens are where the coating remains, the brighter areas have no coating. You can imagine if you removed all the coating it might be difficult to guess the coating, was in fact, gone and in many cases, when the coating is partially gone, a 'cheap fix' for an unscrupulous reseller is to completely remove the coating.

The lens can be recoated, but it will, to a discerning eye, look incorrect because this era 2.8 Planar has a yellowish front element coating and most modern recoating will have a purple cast. Later 2.8 Planars do have a red/purple cast to them though.

Losing the coating on the lens will not have a terrible detrimental effect on images and you'd be very hard pressed to tell any difference between an image taken with this lens and a perfect lens. There are 10 coated surfaces in the 2.8 Planar - losing the coating on one surface is 10% and that 10% does not mean images made are 10% 'worse'. It means the maximum possible detrimental effect is 10% of whatever percent the coating imparts to the image. So if coating imparts 10% to an image then that one coating imparts 1%. And it would be tough to discern a 1% difference in images.

Eric, with that much of the coating gone why does it not have a detrimental effect? Can a lens in this condition be recoated successfully?

I don't think so, I think it's a coating condition. I've seen it on
many if not most Planars of the era. In my experience it has no effect
on performance...

Todd Belcher or Harry Fleenor might just in here...
