Is the Rollei grid you are referring to a Rollei grid or a ground glass? I have found both the Maxwell and Beattie screens too bright-good for dark conditions but too bright for ordinary conditions. The basic advantage of the TLR in my view, is that the screen allows you a sneek preview of the negative. If the contrast is too high in the viewfinder because of the screen then you can't see "details." A screen that is neither too bright nor dim is my ideal. Thanks, Marvin. -----Original Message----- From: rollei_list-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:rollei_list-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of stephen@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: 06 February 2010 11:04 To: rollei_list@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [rollei_list] beattie vs ground glass with rolleigrid Hello all After Carlo's defense of the ground glass screen vs beattie, and my own unscientific test, I went ahead and got a rolleigrid from Jimmy Koh. The rolleigrid brings up the corners of the ground glass nicely, and unlike my old home-made fresnel, has no effect on focusing - it still has the same 'snap' as the plain ground glass, even when focusing on the fresnel instead of the plain spot in the middle. Ground glass + rolleigrid is a bit over a stop dimmer than the Beattie. However, the Beattie just doesn't have a shoulder between focus and unfocus on the near side, while the ground glass + rolleigrid has a good shoulder on both sides. Its much more positive in use, as a result. Since the Beattie is up to $225 at Adorama right now, and requires an expensive focus recalibration on top of that, I think folks with an 'e', 'mx' or older 'cord might want to find a Rolleigrid instead. Much cheaper and on the whole - better.
