Hello all

After Carlo's defense of the ground glass screen vs beattie, and my own
unscientific test, I went ahead and got a rolleigrid from Jimmy Koh.

The rolleigrid brings up the corners of the ground glass nicely, and unlike my
old home-made fresnel, has no effect on focusing - it still has the same 'snap'
as the plain ground glass, even when focusing on the fresnel instead of the
plain spot in the middle. Ground glass + rolleigrid is a bit over a stop dimmer
than the Beattie.

However, the Beattie just doesn't have a shoulder between focus and unfocus on
the near side, while the ground glass + rolleigrid has a good shoulder on both
sides. Its much more positive in use, as a result.

Since the Beattie is up to $225 at Adorama right now, and requires an expensive
focus recalibration on top of that, I think folks with an 'e', 'mx' or older
'cord might want to find a Rolleigrid instead. Much cheaper and on the whole -
better.

Stephen
