2011/7/4 Richard Knoppow <dickburk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>:
Pretty much all the lens cleaners and window cleaners which have MSDS that actually list ingredients turn out to be based on either; 1, isopropyl alcohol (isopropanol); 2, Ammonia, usually ammonium hydroxide but ammonium carbonate in the case of Kodak Lens Cleaner; 3, Butyl alcohol, AKA several
other names..."

Richard:
Last year I found in my Pentax 28mm-80mm zoom lens a strange and pretty large white "foam" spot on the front element, it did not seem fungi and was close to one of the edges. I tried with a blower, with a brush, with a lens tissue and a lens cleaner but I couldn't eliminate it. Finally, I got a medicinal alcohol bottle -ethanol- and dampening a lens tissue with the alcohol I applied it on the white spot, it was disappearing slowly up to disappear completely. It seems it did not cause damage on the lens coating and my zoom looks pristine again, I use this alcohol for some extreme situation only.

I wonder what that was. None of the commercial lens or window cleaners seem to contain ethyl alcohol. I don't know why.
