For web and word processing a 486 is fine. Run contemporary software and don't upgrade to a more recent version of a Word Processor. These have been padded out by the software vendor such that the customer thinks he/she needs to upgrade their computer. That's how the software and hardware business have managed to ratchet up people into using what by any standards is a blazingly powerful computer just to emulate a typewriter.

Aha I suspected so...

I have a short book (72 pages) called, "The Mac is NOT a Typewriter."
It's sub-titled "A style manual for creating professional-level type on your Macintosh."
Filled with good stuff, for those professionals who just got a computer, and are going to use it for a decent word processor.
It's a delightful book, by Peachpit Press, ©1990. ISBN 0-938151-31-2.
I keep my copy right alongside my copy of Strunk & White's "The Elements of Style." <g>

Thor,
Pretty impressive jargon there!
My next computer will probably be my last, as I am still
using my first. It is a IBM 486 (pre-Pentium) with 16 Mb
(or is it 64 Mb) of RAM.

What, pray tell, do you USE a computer for?
