The Chinese sighting of the body was in 1976. Holzell went to great lengths to run down the story and met with the tentmate of the climber who had spotted the body. The fellow who actually found the body had been killed as a porter on the first Japanese North Face expedition in 1980.

The Chinese did recover some gear and this was shown to Holzell. It seems to come, however, from the 1933 and 1936 expeditions and not from 1924. The 1933 climb had located Mallory's 1924 Camp VI and Finch's 1922 Camp V.

This is covered in the second edition of Holzell's MYSTERY OF MALLORY AND IRVINE.
