My wife announced at dinner the other night that given my 40-year-long devotion to Rollei cameras, we should make a pilgrimage to Braunschweig during our month as tourists in Germany this June. This is probably mostly a question for Ferdi, but I thought I'd send it out to the list in general: what is the current status of the factory, and are tours available (German language ones would be fine)? Also, does anyone know off hand which streetcar to take from the Hauptbahnhof and which stop? (I am assuming that the tourist information folks may be clueless - the English guidebooks certainly are -- we'll buy German ones as soon as we get to Cologne). Any other suggestions?
JohnI had the privilege to visit the factory in March 2006, thanks to Dirk-Roger Schmitt one of our list menbers and thanks and Herr Dietmar Kanzer, the sales manager.

Another historical within walking distance from the Hauptbahnhof is the Vogtländer historical building in Campetraße; but there, nothing much to see except a historical summary posted on the wall outside. Actually very few buidings of the Rollei factory in Salzdahlumer Straße have been destroyed if you compare the view from the air in Claus Prochonw's books, taken in the seventies. Only one of the two historical buidings (red bricks) built in 1929 are still used by F&H for their production. The other similar pre-WW-II historical building has been sold or rented to other companies. The big building "Kraemer Bau" of teh fifities has been preserved and renewed and is now rented to various companies. As of March 2006 the Kraemer Machine shop juste behind had been refurbished and waiting for new owners of for renting to new users. As of March 2006 you could access freely around those buidings, have a look inside the former machine shop and see the Holy Red Brickwall and Calibration Targets in the backyard ! ;-)
