But why would anyone want to vacation in San Diego?  Its OK to live here.
but I wouldn't want to visit  Far too expensive.

Now South Dakota is something else.  Have you read the book "61 Hours"?
It is #1 on today's NY Times Best Seller list.  That book extols the virtues
of a SD winter.

This gets curiouser and curiouser. I have only one child, and if my son, who lives in Alaska, tried to hie me off to South Dakota, I would be intensely suspicious as my family has absolutely zero connection with the state.
Better to stay home, it seems to me. As you note, we have more to do once retired than when we worked.
