I think you're  on to something. Right around the same time someone came up 
with photo-typesetting, which itself was very quickly eclipsed by digital, and 
then Garamond, Bodoni, Univers - hence civilization - started to falter before 
our literate eyes. But heck if I'm going to handset a wedding invitation!

The mid-late twentieth century (high mechanical) was a technological sweet spot 
across the various fields and industries.
