Hi John:
I agree with you about the Metal Case, however, whilst I
accept it's more practical to use the TLR without the ERC,, the EERC is
useful to keep the camera external conditions along the years and it's the
reason I use the ERC. Harry Fleenor, the Rollei technician, had a page in
his website where he said he found the Rollei TLR that used the ERC along
the years were always in better general condition than the cameras did not
use it (It seems this page in the Harry's website about which Rollei to buy
is a PDF download for $10 now). I can see my 2,8C leather cover is almost
perfect after almost 70 years of use thanks to to the ERC use.

I keep my 2.8F in a metal case for protection but when I want to use the
camera, I take it out completely and just have the camera on the strap
around my neck or preferably carry it in my hand so it doesn't swing and
hit something (I don't really trust the straps anymore because they are old
and the leather can break but it acts as a safety in case I might drop the
camera from my hand). The metal case gives me confidence that the camera is
well protected if I go out and if it rains, I don't have to worry. You do
need a collapsible lens hood though. Taking the camera in and out of the
ERC to change film is annoying and it can rub on the camera causing wear
marks.

Last September I took the photograph with the 2,8C and the Rollei Plate
Adapter about the Rolleiflash and had a second film holder loaded with the
Wephota 100 I couldn't use up to yesterday I had attached the RPA to the
2,8F and I put the camera into the Rollei Metal Case (yes, the 2,8F can be
kept into the Metal Case with a loaded RPA) and they were in high ambient
temperature and humidity . Yesterday I decided it was time to use them to
avoid some damage on the film specially; I recalled a second and bigger and
older India's rubber tree than the sample I photographed last August (and
more difficult to photograph too) and I took a snapshot about it; it
deserves a second chance...
The Rollei Metal Case is a tank to protect your camera, however it is a
bit heavy to transport, it is a bit bulky and it requires a bit of practice
to focus using the camera loupe despite the Metal Case provides a good
basis for the camera. I think you need true reasons to use the Metal Case,
otherwise the ERC is better to handle the camera
