PX = "Post Exchange", a store on a military post where soldiers can buy items at a cost-plus system, with profits going to morale and welfare activities such as bowling alleys, musical shows, and unit parties. Until World War II, these tended to be fairly small facilities which sold shaving equipment, cigarettes, and the like and had a bar selling beer and soft drinks. After WWII, these became increasingly elaborate and today stock everything from music CD's to outdoor grilles. The Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps call these "Base Exchanges". Those for the Army and Air Force are run by the Army-Air Force Exchange System, commonly known as "AAFES". The Navy has a separate command running Navy and Marine Corps exchanges.

GI = a member of the US military. The origin is obscure but might have arisen from the use of "GI" as a verbal shorthand for "government issue", though this has been challenged. In World War One, US soldiers were called "doughboys", in WWII they were "GI's" or "Dog Faces". By Viet-Nam, they had become "Grunts", though "Dog Faces" and "Grunts" are often used more for combat personnel than for REMF (rear-echelon mother f***ers) types such as myself. The term GI is applied to soldiers, sailors, Marines, and airmen though it probably means soldiers more to the general public.
