Subject: [rollei_list] Tessars

Question for the group: I have2 Automats with 3.5 Tessars. One has the expected Opton-Tessar, coated, but the other, a bit older, Very different, has been re-lensed with a Carl Zeiss Tessar, a much newer lens. My question: the CZ tesar beats the daylights out of the Opton. what was the difference in formula between the coated Jena 3.5, coated Opton 3.5, and the later CZ 3.5? Is this a better lens, or just an
individual in better condition?

How did you determine the age of the two lenses?
Zeiss held a great many patents for Tessar type lenses. Its nearly impossible to determine which are for production lenses. Note that the Kodak Ektar is a Tessar type lens and generally outperforms Zeiss lenses of the same era, so its possible to make a better Tessar. What is different, impossible to know without having the prescriptions for both, perhaps glass, perhaps something else. Its possible one lens is just better than the other, its also possible that the camera with the poor lens is not quite in adjustment. If the camera does not focus accurately or if the lens is slightly out of parallel it could mimic some lens defects. Looking at the aerial image using a very high quality low power microscope might give some clues as to what the differences are.
