Its been a long time since I've seen a Berlebach tripod, I
will have to look them up on the web. This thing was definitely
made in San Francisco. Two section, quite sturdy and seems well
damped. At one time I sort of collected tripods. I have a couple
of interesting ones. The ones I used mostly for large format were
my Davis and Sanford stands, I have two of different lengths. For
the Rollei, Speed Graphic and 35mm cameras a Tiltall. The Tiltall
is actually very rigid and will hold an 8x10 quite well. The
Sharman is actually lighter. I also have a Quick Set, has some
advantages. Small top allows dropping the front of a Speed
Graphic. I also have a couple of larger stands but hardly ever
use them. Eventually, I will find a suitable tilt top for the
Sharman and put it to work.

Richard,
sounds like the German Berlebach tripods, considered the sturdiest and best vibration-damped tripods.

I wonder if anyone on this list knows anything about the
Sharman Camera Works in San Francisco. I have a Sharman
tripod,
minus a tilt head. Wood, very nicely made, indeterminate age,
could be anywhere from the 1930's to 1950's bur from its
condition I think not too old. I've done a google search,
which
found some for sale but no information on them or the
company. It
has a 1/4-20 fixing bolt so will take a variety of standard
tilt
heads. I don't remember where I got it, probably a swap
meet, had
it a long time.
I also looked at a couple of 1950's vintage catalogs
with no
luck.
I also posted the question in Pure-Silver. My google
search
found someone else also asking about Sharman in a large format
list. No answer.
