I watched a lot of excellent pictures with great sharpness, taken with
Rollei 35 T or S, without range finder. What do you think about it?

Richard Knoppow:
Rolleiflex's seem to have earned a reputation for sharpness early on. I suspect this is because of the excellent focusing means provided by the reflex finder and careful matching at the factory. When the Rollei was first produced most roll film cameras were guess focus or required focusing with a ground glass adaptor. While the ground glass would be precise it was useless for hand held work. The same is true of the Super Ikonta and its earlier version, the Super Ikomat, the excellent rangefinder allows precise focusing of these cameras yielding sharp pictures even though the front element focusing Tessar has some faults. This is probably also true of the Leica. The original Elmar lens was just a version of the Tessar, a very good lens but the reputation for sharpness was at least partly the result of the precise rangefinder. Cameras which can not be focused precisely will rarely produce sharp pictures no matter how good the lenses are.
This makes an awful lot of sense. Same is true for the mechanical integrity
of the camera. Precise focusing and precise mechanicals (I'm thinking most
cameras before the TLRs were bellows, folders, etc.) make a huge difference
in image quality.
