Well, I must say that this list works wonders. Thanks to everyone who contributed to solving this problem. I have now had some success. The only things that I have done (besides those suggested in other e- mails) were to reinstall Epson scan (downloaded from their site), and to uncheck the "thumbnail" box in the main scan window. I don't know which of these did the trick, but I successfully scanned several MF stuff yesterday (let's hope it still scans documents and 35 mm stuff - I have not tried yet). It seems that my Epson scan is different from that Carlos has - I use a MAC. Could that account for it?

Thanks,
Cheers to all,
gram

Thanks Ferdi, a very interesting bit of info which I had not considered.

I have not used Epson Scan for quite a few years but I remember there
was something you could not do when scanning MF slides. IIRC it is
about the choice between "Thumbnail" and "Normal". I am talking of
the blue two way switch between the larger "Preview Scan" and "Scan"
buttons down on the screen. With MF it has to be set to "Normal". I
have version 2.77D. I am not sure it has anything to do with your
problem. I do remember the scanner did not work on "Thumbnail" and it
took me a long time to figure it out.

Hi Sanders,
I have been looking at the holders, too, but even when placing the MF
on top of the 35mm on, I see no difference as to the notches.

I use the 4990 with the supplied Epson software.
It doesn't sound like a software issue to me.
Epson scanners "look" at a strip at the very top of
the scanning glass to determine the type of media
it is scanning. The film carriers all have notches cut
out at the top to expose this strip. You can also
scan transparent media directly on the glass, so
long as you do not block the strip. If the strip is
covered, even in part -- by the carrier or something
on the glass -- then the scanner thinks you are
scanning reflective media.

The fact that another carrier worked suggests to
me that there is something amiss with the carrier
you are using with the failed scans. It could be
a carrier for another generation of Epson scanners,
with the wrong-sized notch for your model. I've had
several Epsons, and the carrier notches have
changed from model to model, and they are not
interchangeable -- the wrong notch will produce
your error.

Sanders

Elias,
I am resinstalling the software and drivers. I have not tred scanning
without the holder, but I'll try that, too.

As Carlos suggested, try reinstalling the software & drivers.
Also try scanning without the holder - place the neg down on the
glass bed, and take a preview, see what comes up.
If I'm not mistaken there are optical codes on the holders that tells
the software what to look for - maybe you have a problem there.

That is one of the differences regarding my Epson software version 2.75A
despite the identical windows; the preview image is set to "Thumbnail" by
default and I have no problem to scan MF slides and negs using the
"Thumbnail" preview image, in fact the few times I used the software I never changed to the "Normal" preview image option, you also can see the normal
size -if you want it- after the preview image appears in a new window.
Another difference is that the "Scan" button is active in Gram's Epson
screen despite the preview image does not work, in my version the "Scan"
button is activated only if the "Preview" scanning worked fine.-

Carlos
