I had commented I bought a Rolleinar 3 Bay III some weeks ago, I also commented it was in pristine condition, like new, it came with the original F&H box and the original leather case, this leather case like new too. When I used the Tri X 220 with the 2.8C some days later, I commented that the shots with the Rolleinar 3 BIII were a failure because they were out of focus (three shots); I thought I did something wrong because I never had used it, but I examined the images in detail afterward and noticed a common pattern, they were out of focus where they looked in focus in the ground glass and they were in focus for some point in the background where they looked out of focus in the ground glass. I decided to take more images for the future to verify this issue. After to receive the SL 66 a few weeks ago and to use it for close-ups, I thought I’d use the Rolleinars rarely, but I used them (1 for ‘cord IV and 3 for the C) this week because I don’t have the Plates Adapter for the SL66 and recalling the R3 issue, I took two photographs with this Rolleinar on the 2.8C and the Efke 25 film sheets, the results were identical according described above and then I looked for the problem today. I won’t comment in detail the several tests I did using the focal plane ground glass insert, they helped to find the explanation, I did the final test using the viewing lens Heidosmat and the Rolleinar 3 for the taking lens on the viewing lens (both auxiliaries lenses). To be brief, I found a BIG difference focusing identical subject from identical distance according I used the Rolleinar Heidosmat or the taking lens Rolleinar on the camera viewing lens, the difference was so big that I couldn’t compensate it turning the focusing knob from stop to stop, I needed to move the tripod to find the new focusing point. I measured the distances with a metre and found that the focusing distance for the Heidosmat Rolleinar was within the Rolleinar 3 range, 24 to 32 cm (9.45” to 12.60”), but the taking lens Rolleinar range was from 45 to 100 cm (17.70” to 39.37”), the Rolleinar 1 range !!, this was the problem, I have a true Heidosmat Rolleinar 3 and a taking lens Rolleinar 1 engraved Rolleinar 3!. I examined the set with a powerful magnifying glass, I couldn’t find a minimal detail to say someone put a Rolleinar 1 glass in a Rolleinar 3 ring (BTW the ring is 100% original, it also has the typical Rollei letters saying “Rolleinar 3”), the set is like new really. Someone made an error at the factory or someone did a “professional” work to insert the Rolleinar 1 glass in the Rolleinar 3 ring.
