John:
I have no info about the exact cause Rollei manufactured the
Rolleimot. Before to have Prochnow books, I had read on the Rolleimot
in an article written by the well known Italian Rollei collector
Angelo Derqui, he wrote the Rolleimot was made to be used for
situations where the photographer presence was not suitable or to take
photographs in risky or difficult access sites. Prochnow writes a
technical explanation on the Rolleimot working, f.e. the Rolleimot for
the 150 magazine and for the SL 66 have stronger springs than the
"normal" Rolleimot 1.
It seems that Rolleimots had some type of problem with the film
transport and it was necessary to disconnect them to start again, they
were noisy too much too and according Report 2 these issues caused
very low Rolleimot sales for 1969 and it was discontinued. It does not
look they were used at factory to test cameras, but I'm not sure about
it.
