2010/4/17 Richard Knoppow <dickburk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>:
One must be careful in composing when using the Rolleikin, at least on cameras like mine the parallax correction is no longer effective. Rollei compensates for this by limiting the area shown by the finder mask to one that insures that everything visible on the ground glass will appear on the film but precise vertical composition is not possible. The same for the sports finder mask but those are not expected to be precise to begin with.

The point you comment above is interesting very much, there was a similar topic in the RUG on August 2004, "Rolleikin and parallax", I measured the "Rolleikin C" masks that I use with the 2.8C and wrote:

" ...Then this afternoon I took my Rolleikin C (2 C) kit to
measure the three masks... SURPRISE¡... the main mask, the inner mask guide for film measures 24x36mm exactly (the rectangle of course), the
mask for the
focusing screen...24x33mm due to the 6x6 parallax
automatic compensation does not work for 35mm, and the Sportsfinder finder mask rectangle measures 20x28mm¡ to compensate the increased
parallax, then I found the explanation why I don't get
visible parallax using the Rolleikin, maybe the system
is not perfect, but...it works¡"

The secondary mirror it's very useful to focus the scene with the Rolleikin at the horizontal format if necessary to focus the scene,
afterward you use the Sportsfinder with mask to frame it.

I use the secondary mirror the same way. Of course, it is not available on the Rolleicord IV. I've shot a lot of portraits using the Rolleikin and never had a problem with framing but they were negatives. I think the lack of precise framing is not a problem except if you are shooting slides and then probably not much of one. The ratio of focal length to image diagonal is just about right for portraiture.
