You can see in one of my blogs the lens
diagrams for every lens used for the Rollei TLR cameras, including Sonnar,
Distagon, Tele-Xenar and Super-Angulon and some auxiliaries lenses like the
Magnar and Mutars. The lens diagrams for the Biometar 2,8/80 and the
Xenotar 2,8/80 are _Identical_ , perhaps there were some differences for
the real lenses but the basic design is the same. It's easy to guess some
Carl Zeiss Jena technicians emigrating from East Germany (the Soviet zone)
to West Germany when it was still possible to do it in the post-war era
(before the Berlin Wall construction and strict border control) carried the
design to Schneider or something similar happened.

The f2.8 Tessar has problems because its about the fastest a
Tessar can be made and is somewhat of an illusion since it has
considerable aberrations at the larger stops. This is inherent in
the design in addition to the problem with mis-matched elements
rumored to have occured. f/3.5 is probably the limit of a Tessar
although lots of cameras have f/2.8 or even 2.5 Tessars.
I have a 2.8E with a Xenotar. It is probably the sharpest
lens on any camera I have but also this camera is very well
aligned. It is really too bad that there is no practical way to
replace the Selenium cell elements in them.
