2mm thick which deteriorates over time. Does anyone know

I much prefer these cases to the leather ones because you
can instantly see
the filter type without opening it.

This sort of foam is very widely used and is a PITA
because it eventually turns to sticky mush. For the filter
case I think you would do better to replace it with soft
sheet polystyrene foam. That seems to last forever and has
enough padding to protect the object in the case. I think
you can get the stuff as packaging material at stationery
stores.
