When I was in highschool one of my teachers was a part time
professional photographer. He did "kidnapping" which was going
around and photographing new born babies and selling the pictures
to the parents. He worked for some outfit that did this, sending
them the negatives. I used to assist him after school. We used
Rolleis with Roleikins installed and shot on 35mm film. Just
economy plus the format was exactly right. The whole thing was an
education to me: for one thing I saw how a lot of people lived.
Most of these people had very little money. I wondered why many
of them married; they did not seem happy. It changed my view of
the world. Ever since I can't drive by an apartment or house
without imagining what is going on inside.
If there is a shortage of anything in this world it is
kindness.

Hi Carlos,
Very nice pictures, vertical portraits in particular, full of atmosphere and character.
I have to confess that I have a Rolleikin and never used it.
Ok, I think I'll give it a try. I load my own 35mm cartridges from bulk roll, so I can set up one cartridge with twelve frames.

Javier

Hello Javier:
Perhaps there are no advantages to
using the Rolleikin today, but there is fun. Anyway, I was
in the farm 12 years ago and needed film, I had only
carried the 2,8C and I had used all the 120 film; I could
get 35mm film in the little town and the Rolleikin saved me
the situation.
You can find more than 50 photographs in my Flickr gallery
taken with the Rolleikin adapter, some of them are among
the most viewed photographs in the gallery, these are some

Honestly, I have to say that I don’t see any advantage
in the use of Rolleikin nowadays. The main appeal of
Rolleiflex is the square format and the big negative.
Both advantages are lost with 35mm film. Besides, it is
very difficult to compose horizontally, unless you have
a camera with detachable hood and a prism.
On the other hand, there are other accessories that I
find very useful. I use the plate adapter when I want
to check a camera or make comparisons between two of
them. The plates assure the film is perfectly plane and
the sheets can be developed in batches of few with
customized times if necessary.
I’m also intrigued by the Rolleimeter and recently
bought one. Unfortunately, it was the version for 3.5E
models with lightmeter, and don’t fit on my MX.
As a personal note, my very first Rollei was a
Rolleicord Va that I bought second hand in the nineteen
eighties. The camera came with 16 kit exposure mounted.
I was so ignorant at the time that I didn’t understand
that it was an accessory. It took me several weeks and
many rolls to discover that and remove it.
Best wishes,
Javier

Interesting- As I have probably posted in the past,
my first Rollei was a 2,8C bought in Hong Kong when
I was in the Navy. Of course I bought every
accessory they had because of the prices there at
the time. I used it for years, along with a very
sick GE light meter. Since the meter needle was
sort of random, most exposures were based on the
sheet of paper that came with the film. I parted
with it to get a 3.5F which was required for the
Rolleimarin IV.
I am now without a Rollei, having sold the system
to a Navy diver when I moved away from the ocean
and stopped diving. Attempts to contact him to
re-buy the system haven’t had a response but I will
still stay in this group, enjoying the exchanges
and history.

or the Rolleikin effect
Hello José:
I like to use the Rolleikin for
fun at least once per year, the Rollei TLR becomes
a different camera with this accessory. I agree
with you about portraits and the horizontal format,
it's uncomfortable, but I use it sometimes, I focus
with the secondary mirror if necessary and I frame
the picture with the sportsfinder mask. I have two
Rolleikin sets and I had no problems with them; the
2.8C has the Rolleikin counter knob from factory
and I added the Rolleikin counter knob to the 2,8F
and 3,5F permanently; I found a Rolleikin counter
knob out of the set in eBay some years ago and I
bought it, they are rare to find today and most of
the sets are offered without it.
BTW, I could see some Ilford and Kodak 120 film in
Mercado Livre Brasil right now;, looking at the
site quickly, I don't know the film condition. We
can still get 120 films in Argentina, but we never
know until when.
Good work with the Rolleikin in your Flickr gallery!
