Richard-- I used #22 tapestry needles which have a blunt point. The holes must be clear of the old stitches. I used needles on either end and stitched like lacing a shoe. I had to used pliers to initially pull the needle through while the waxed thread was doubled. Prior to stitching I softened the dry leather with mink oil. I appreciate the information on the glue. If there are some short spots that require attention I may try it. I found some good waxed, heavy thread but could not find a good needle to use and those holes looks so darn small too) so instead I decided to try the gluing route. I'm happy to report that this glue: http://www.loctiteproducts.com/products/detail.asp?catid=15&subid=34&plid=195<http://www.loctiteproducts.com/products/detail.asp?catid=15&subid=34&plid=195> which specifically mentions use for leathers, worked great. There is no way that leather is coming apart unless it tears, it's like cement! I still may re-stitch just to have the thread there but really hardly need to.
