Marc, you are right Hillary's Kodak Retina 118 had a Zeiss Tessar lens. It seems the model was also available with a more common Xenar lens from Schneider-Kreuznach You can see a Kodak Retina 118 Camera in ebay http://www.ebay.de/itm/KODAK-RETINA-I-vermutlich-TYPE-118-mit-XENAR-Objektiv-/331042120560?pt=DE_Alte_Kameras&hash=item4d13a5e370&nma=true&si=eLGVVwzoji1BAVVcvyt1uy2xPQc%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 Very interesting that Hillary did not use the latest camera but a "vintage" camera from 1935/36 climbing up the highest spot on earth. Hillary purchased the camera second hand. ;-) The famous photo on summit of Mt. Everest showing Norgay was taken with that camera on Kodakchrome. Regarding the redesign of the battery compartment I was referring to experience with my Rollei 35 SE with an exposure control in the viewfinder. I guess this adjustment might be possible for the older versions but I have not tried it yet.
