This is because someone thought it was the "correct" pronunciation and Americans think we are yahoos and don't want to appear to be ignorant. OTOH, the Brits just say it the way it looks except for British names like Featherstonehough which is pronounced "Chumley".I have only heard it pronounced phonetically "nikon", with a short i like in "pill" in the UK, as in Japan, same in France and everywhere else I have been except the US.
