Well, to be fair, VW bought Auto Union as Audi
WAS successful. They just were not as successful
as was VW. Audi owned the rights to the Wankel
engine, and that was the primary incentive for VW
to purchase the company. VW continued to receive
$10 a pop for every Wankel made by Mazda until the late 1980's.
