Being from the north central area, perhaps I can be more impartial about the effect of east coast vs. the west coast earthquakes. Because of the tremendous effect that the east coast, notably NYC and DC, has on the nation and even the world the scale could be easily multiplied by 1.50. The evacuation of huge numbers of government employees from their workplace disrupts the work they are doing to bring the jobs back. In fact a government economic expert recently stated that this event was another obstacle to economic recovery. So while in CA a 5.8 is a foot massage, in the East it is a blow to the head.

It's been a hoot listening to all of the wild and exaggerated news reports about the right-coast earthquake... Here on the left-coast, a 5.8 quake is nothing more than a 'foot massage'. Barely noticed by the residents or the news. Yeah, maybe some stuff falls off of shelves and maybe something falls over, but it's just a normal part of living here. Pretty much ignored.
